Working in the temple twice a week gives me a lot of time to ponder on eternal things. It's hard to explain, but I feel that I am starting to really "see" what Heavenly Father wants me to see and understand.
Dad and I enjoy so much studying together often. It brings us so close in a spiritual way that we are sure we couldn't have if we did not study together. lately, we have been studying "light and truth" and also trying to understand better the blessings of the temple. I came across a couple of quotes that I would like to share with all of you that may help us all realize why we need to go through trials and what they do for us.
In the Doctrine and Covenants 136:31 it states, "My people must be tried in all things, that they may be prepared to receive the glory that I have for them, even the glory of Zion (the Celestial Kingdom)." George Q. Cannon, an early apostle, said that the Lord "is trying us...that He may approve of us in every respect. If we have set out to obtain celestial glory, the precious and inestimable gift of eternal lives, there isn't any trial necessary for our purification and perfection as Saints of God that we will not have to meet, contend with and overcome. Such trials will come in various shapes...whether they be in having everything move on prosperously, or in adversity, hardship and the laying down our lives for the truth." These trials will continue "until the design of the Lord is fully accomplished and the dross of our natures is purified and these earthly tabernacles are redeemed from everything that is groveling and low and brought into entire subjection to the mind and will of God."
We all go through trials. We all have problems. It is how we deal with them and what they can make of us in the end that is so critical. Let's all remember, as a family, that "God is weaving the tapestry of our lives" as Pres. Hinckley said, and that we need to do all we can to be valiant sons and daughters of God, preparing ourselves to live in celestial glory. I hope you will all make a renewed effort to study, pray and go to the temple often that God may be able to prepare you for the glory of Zion. And let us, as a family, pray for each other constantly, that there may be No Empty Chairs.
With love, Mom
(For those of you who don't have the book, The Plan of Salvation by Matthew Brown, it is worth every penny to buy it and read it. And if you have the book, read it again. It really can help to open our eyes to eternity. It is a great companion to the scriptures.)
